Landscaping the Crinkle-Crankle Community Garden

Update Monday 10 December: Planning approval has been granted and this includes a boules court and several benches. The landscaping works are scheduled to begin this week. We hope to cause minimal inconvenience to those who currently live close by and/or use the facility.

Wheathampstead is fortunate to have a rare example of Victorian crinkle-crankle walls – the only publicly accessible ones in Hertfordshire. When the Moat House flats were built in part of what had been the garden of the Old Rectory in King Edward Place, the Parish Council was given the rest of the space that is enclosed by these walls to use as a community asset. The Council plans to develop the garden as an attractive space in which to relax and enjoy the beautiful view of St Helen’s Church. The small building next to the garden known as the 'Tithe Barn' has also been updated and will be used as storage for the Parish Council.

Our vision for the garden:

• to restore the garden to its delightful nineteenth-century glory and provide a beautiful space for the people of Wheathampstead to enjoy
• to create a garden that will appeal to visitors from further afield and inspire the next generation of gardeners
• to create a space that is tranquil, accessible, educational, and a wildlife-friendly habitat.

New features will include:

• A petanque/boules court, which will be free to use
• seating
• sensory gardens
